Karel Doing is an independent artist, filmmaker and researcher. His interest in experimental film and expanded cinema is reframed within a critical approach toward modernity and post-modernity, in search of new meanings of the real and the material. Through the study of (phyto)chemical process and the re-use of cinematic heritage he explores alternative knowledge systems. In many of his works the rhythmical, painterly and performative qualities of the analog film medium are foregrounded. His films, performances and installations have been shown internationally, including shows in Paris, Los Angeles, Toronto, Bonn, Breda, Rotterdam and London.
The artist will present his installation/performance the Mulch Spider’s Dream which will be tailored to the specificity of the Lumen Crypt Gallery. This spectacle can be witnessed by 6 spectators each time it is executed and takes the audience on an evocative journey destined beyond the human, into a multi species field. The performance makes use of 16mm film projection, spoken word, shadow objects and optical distortions. The crypt will function as a 360 degree screen, filled with light and shadow, amber and fiery colours, alternating rhythms and evocative stories. The spider creeps in silently.
